Multi-National Corporate Rewards Program

Global Corporation Rewards Program Tammy Engel CTU Online MGM336 March 19, 2012 Professor Moutaz Abou-Robieh Abstract Designing a prizes program that will be a fascination for new workers and motivation to remain for existing staff can be hard for any partnership, however is made considerably more so when the organization gets universal. There are a few factors that impact worker inspiration and these might be influenced by culture, condition, socio-financial matters, and politics.A investigation of the propelling components for representatives situated in the United States, France, and Japan will be introduced, alongside compelling administration attributes for those individual areas. A fundamental prizes program for every division of the organization will likewise be introduced. Global Corporation Rewards Program A prizes program or advantages bundle is consistently an enormous piece of an employee’s choice to apply with, acknowledge, or keep an occupation with any organizat ion.The program must hold claim to the worker and be proper for the area, particularly if the organization is a worldwide association. A few advantages may not work in different nations, for instance worker acknowledgment in America for the most part comprises of singling a person out for credit, while in Japan this sort of acknowledgment would be very awkward for the representative. Impacting factors for the formation of proper prizes programs for our global organization (MNC) will be examined. These will incorporate worker inspiration factors and effective initiative characteristics.Understanding Motivation There are a few interior and outside variables that can rouse a person. There have been numerous investigations by clinicians that attention on these components including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the ERG hypothesis, the help cleanliness/inborn outward need hypothesis, and the accomplishment hypothesis. There is one abrogating issue with these speculations; they depen d on Western European and the United States and hence may not be material to workers that are not from these locations.Even inside these territories there will be some variety in the inspirational components for any representative. Since these speculations do offer some significant understanding into the mind of 66% of our MNC, we will examine their suggestions. Maslow’s pecking order of necessities depends on the reason that an individual’s needs are assembled into five fundamental classifications; these classifications are dependent upon each other in that Maslow accepted the one couldn't proceed onward to accomplishing or being roused by the following class of requirements until the past ones had been met. Phatak, Bhagat, and Kashlak, Motivating and Leading across Borders and Cultures392, 2009) These classifications are physiological needs, for example, food, safe house, and wellbeing; security needs †safe house and security; having a place needs, feeling some portion of a gathering, love; regard needs, for example, confidence and the regard of others; lastly self-completion needs which would show accomplishing one’s extreme potential. Like Maslow’s pecking order is the ERG hypothesis created by Clayton Alderfer. The ERG hypothesis characterizes needs into three entwined classes; presence needs (think physiological and wellbeing needs), relatedness needs (like having a place and regard needs), and development needs (this identifies with confidence and self-realization). Different speculations classify these necessities in an unexpected way, however all are fundamentally the same as. While there is some assurance to these hypotheses, as expressed there is one superseding issue: they depend on an Eastern European/American individual. There might be some appropriateness to the workers of our MNC from North American, less pertinence for those from France, and little relevance to our Japanese staff. These hypotheses depend on highe r request needs, for example, singular accomplishment, self-completion, and connection. People from the Japanese division might be progressively worried about lower request needs, for example, wellbeing, security, and physical solaces. Phatak, Bhagat, and Kashlak, Motivating and Leading across Borders and Cultures392, 2009) Other speculations depend on process hypotheses instead of mental parts of conduct. One such hypothesis is known as the hope hypothesis. This idea expresses that workers are roused by desires from the board, connecting practices with results, and putting together conduct with respect to a prize framework. The value hypothesis is like this in that representatives will endeavor to adjust their work conduct as indicated by what they see others do (or not do). Phatak, Bhagat, and Kashlak, Motivating and Leading across Borders and Cultures392, 2009) There are three standards related with this hypothesis: the standard of value, the standard of need, and the standard of fairness. This hypothesis is particularly appropriate to our American division. Another part of rousing workers is the connection among supervisors and their particular representatives. These people must have the option to work near detail practical objectives for the representatives dependent on the away from of the company’s strategic vision.Application of Motivational Theories As expressed, our supervisors should be exceptionally cautious about how the spur our representatives dependent on the physical area of the worker, the social foundation of the individual, and the other natural and outward factors that may impact that workers conduct. Representatives situated in increasingly individualistic nations, for example, America and France will be progressively spurred by inborn elements and self-completion needs. These people are progressively worried about impartial treatment when contrasted with procuring comparable compensation for comparable work.Other engaging prizes o r advantages may incorporate took care of time, protection, and predictable pay increments. These people will be worried about the solaces that the workplace brings to the table including large office spaces; agreeable lounges; comforts like exercise centers, lunch administration, and childcare; these representatives esteem their independence and will value being publically perceived for a vocation very much done. Then again, our Japanese representatives will be increasingly worried about outward and essential security/physiological requirements. Phatak, Bhagat, and Kashlak, Motivating and Leading across Borders and Cultures392, 2009) These people esteem family and dedication. Numerous ages of a family live respectively, so they may not feel that childcare is a commendable advantage as they have family accessible to deal with kids or old family members. Socially Appropriate Reward Programs The prizes programs for our organization will comprise of a base bundle that will be fitting a nd material to all divisions. Pay will be founded on understanding and friends sponsored protection will be available.Recognition grants for achievement accomplishment will be given to our American and French workers at month to month staff gatherings, while these equivalent sorts of grants will be given to our Japanese representatives secretly and with little flourish, regarding their security. Working conditions will be spotless and fulfill the most noteworthy wellbeing guidelines accessible for all branches. People will be given access to all administrative staff alongside some fitting self-rule contingent on position and obligations. Representatives will likewise be firmly urges to take an interest in a group culture inside the working environment, with an accentuation on coordinated effort and cohesion. Each worker will be given a liberal allocation of took care of time; this will be profoundly esteemed by every division. (Phatak, Bhagat, and Kashlak, International Human Resourc es Management, 2009) Employees in France will be permitted the utilization of organization possessed get-away property. The US division will be given organization sponsored legitimate and budgetary guide, while the Japanese representatives will be given a month to month family stipend dependent on the quantity of people in their family. These extra advantages are explicit to area and fiscally proportionate between divisions.Leadership Types Each division will be driven by people deliberately looked over the local region. This will assist with guaranteeing that correspondence is clear and exact and that social moires are recognizable and followed. All chiefs will be required to broadly educate across landmasses so they know about and acquainted with the activities of each particular division. Our American administrators will be explicitly picked for their capacities to set objectives, relational abilities, and demonstrated authority history. The French administration staff will be pi cked for comparative characteristics. The Japanese authority will be picked for demonstrated influential positions and capacity to be accessible to the representatives just as to advance a group air. Our pioneers will be urged to set clear objectives for our workers and to meet separately with representatives straightforwardly under them to impart these objectives. Upper administration will be urging staff under them to be creative and to convey those thoughts all through the business. While attraction and appeal will attract representatives to an administration figure in the US and France, this trademark isn't proper in Japan. (Phatak, Bhagat, &Kashlak, International Human Resources Management, 2009) Another trademark that ought to be innate in our administrators is the capacity to advance working environment and assignment pride. This is a significant factor for inspiring all representatives, paying little mind to the area. Pioneers ought to be reliable and have brilliant relat ional abilities, great group building capacities, and outstanding haggling capacities. End It is critical to assess a few parts of the earth and culture preceding going into a business relationship with any global location. This is particularly significant when the way of life that you are entering is novel and new to you and your organization. Numerous components can influence how representatives from these differed areas will work and how they are propelled to function; cautious investigation of thes

Hamlets Recognition of Love Essay - 1271 Words

How would it be possible for Hamlet to express or even recognize love, without having a clear definition of what love is? One may define love as a lover’s passion, devotion or tenderness for someone or something. Hamlet perceives love as an emotion that causes loss, devastation and pain. In the play, Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, the main character uses love as a reason for his actions, but never truly loves any of the characters except his father. Hamlet seems to be more of a love story but, truthfully, it is more of revenge then love. Though Hamlet does not appear to love many people in this play, his feelings for his father shine true. In Act I. Scene ii, while Horatio and Hamlet were speaking of Hamlet’s father, Hamlet†¦show more content†¦Another example of how much Hamlet loves his father is in Act III, Scene VI. Hamlet is telling his mother of how he really feels about her. He is making her realize all the wrong she has done to him and his father. Suddenly Hamlets father enters the room and he says, [â€Å"†¦But look, amazement on thy mother sits. Oh step between her and her fighting soul. Conceit in weakest bodies strongest works. Speak to her, Hamlet.† (Act III. Scene VI. 124-127)] When Hamlets father speaks to him and tells him to speak to his mother, Hamlet immediately obeys him. He respects his father and loves him enough to listen to him and stop fighting with his mother. It shows that no matter the flaws he has with his mother he would throw them out just to please his father. Hamlet has proven himself in many ways that he would do anything for his father no matter what the circumstance was. There was an unbreakable bond between mother and son that was completely destroyed when a mother married her husband’s brother. Gertrude and Hamlet are not as close as it seems. Hamlet’s feelings had changed towards his mother after she betrayed his father. Hamlet shows his true colors for his mother when he says, [â€Å"†¦Calls virtue hypocrite takes off the rose From the fair forehead of an innocent love And sets a blister there, makes marriage vows As false as dicers’ oaths†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Act III. Common Application Essay Option #4 Solving a Problem

Alexander wrote the essay below in response to the 2018-19  Common Application essay option #4. The prompt reads,  Describe a problem youve solved or a problem youd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. Alexanders Common Application Essay: Grandpas Rubiks Cube My grandfather was a puzzle junkie. All kinds of puzzles—jigsaw, Sudoku, crossword, riddles, logic puzzles, word jumbles, those small twisted pieces of metal that you try and separate. He’d always say he was â€Å"trying to stay sharp,† and these puzzles occupied a lot of his time, especially after he retired. And for him, it often turned into a group activity; my brothers and I would help him sort out the edge pieces for his jigsaws, or flip through the heavy dictionary he kept in his office, looking for synonyms for â€Å"bastion.† After he passed away, we were sorting through his possessions—pile to keep, pile to donate, pile to sell—and found a box in an upstairs closet with nothing in it save an assortment of Rubik’s Cubes. Some of the cubes were solved (or had never been started), while some of them were mid-solve. Large ones, small ones, 3x3s, 4x4s, and even a 6x6. I never saw my grandfather working on one of them, but I wasn’t surprised to find them; puzzles were his life. Before we donated the cubes to the thrift store, I took one; grandpa had managed to get one side—yellow—completed, and I wanted to finish it for him. I’ve never had the knack he had for solving puzzles. It wasn’t just games he could solve; he worked as a plumber for forty years, and was good at getting to the bottom of all sorts of problems at work. His workshop was full of projects he had started fixing, from broken radios and clocks to cracked picture frames and lamps with faulty wiring. He liked investigating these things, discovering how they worked, so he could fix them in his own way. That’s not something I inherited. I keep every owner’s manual, every installation and user guide; I can’t look at something and know how it works, how to fix it, how to rig up a solution. But I’m determined to solve this Rubik’s cube. I have no idea how long that will take, or how I’ll do it. I know there are books and websites dedicated to the math behind it, to coming up with a logical solution. But I’m not going to read any of their advice. I’ll give it a shot, working slowly, with plenty of mistakes (and probably some frustration). And, as I’m trying to solve it, I’ll be sharing a connection with my grandfather. It’s a small and simple way of remembering him, and honoring one of his favorite pastimes. I don’t think I’m going to take up puzzling as seriously as he did—although, down the road, who knows? Maybe it’s in my genes after all. But this one puzzle, this one problem to solve, is my way of keeping him with me. It’s something I can take to college, to my first apartment, to pretty much any place I could go. And, with time, I hope it will help me understand more about my grandfather as a person. By taking up this puzzle, maybe I’ll learn to see the world the way he did—how anything can be worked through, can be improved. He was the most stubborn, tenacious, dedicated person I’ve ever known; if being able to eventually solve this Rubik’s cube gives me a quarter of his resolve and patience, I’ll be happy. I may not be able to solve it. I may continue to twist those plastic squares for years without getting any closer to a solution. Even if I can’t solve it, if I just don’t have it in me, I will h ave tried. And for that, I think my grandfather would be very proud. ________________ Critique of Grandpas Rubiks Cube Below youll find a discussion of the strengths of Alexanders essay as well as a few notes about possible shortcomings. Keep in mind that essay option #4 allows so much latitude that your essay may have almost nothing in common with Alexanders essay and still be an excellent response to the prompt. Alexanders Topic If you read the tips and strategies for option #4, youll see that this essay option gives you a lot of flexibility as you identify the problem you choose to address. Your problem could be anything from a global issue to a personal challenge. Alexander chooses a small and personal scale for the problem he hopes to solve. This decision is perfectly fine, and in many ways it has advantages. When college applicants try to tackle too much, the resulting essay can be overly general, vague, or even absurd. Imagine trying to describe steps for solving a huge issue such as global warming or religious intolerance in 650 words. The application essay is an awfully small space for addressing such huge issues. Alexanders essay clearly does not face this challenge. The problem he hopes to solve is indeed small. In fact, it fits in his hand: a Rubiks Cube. One could argue that a Rubiks Cube a rather trivial and silly choice for Common Application option #4. Whether or not you can solve the puzzle really doesnt matter much in the big scheme of things. And by itself, an applicants ability to solve a Rubiks Cube isnt really going to impress the colleges admissions officers that much, although mastery of the puzzle can be used productively on a college application..   Context, however, is everything. A Rubiks Cube may seem like the focus of Alexanders essay, but the essay is about much more than solving a puzzle. Whats really important in Alexanders essay is the  reason  he wants to attempt the puzzle: whether he succeeds or fails, the Rubiks Cube connects Alexander to his grandfather. My Grandpas Rubiks Cube is not a trivial essay about playing with a plastic toy; rather, it is a charming essay about family relationships, nostalgia, and personal determination. The Essays Tone Alexanders essay is pleasingly modest. Too many option #4 essays essentially say, Look how amazing I am for solving this difficult problem! Of course there is nothing wrong with tooting your own horn a little in your application, but you dont want to come across as an egotist or braggart. Alexanders essay certainly doesnt have this problem. In fact, he presents himself as someone who isnt particularly good at solving puzzles or figuring out how household items work. That kind of humility and honestly reveals a level of maturity that can work extremely well in an application essay. That said, the essay does reveal a quiet determination as Alexander vows to keep working on Rubiks Cube without ever consulting any online cheats or strategy guides. He may not succeed in his efforts, but we admire his attempt. Even more important, the essay reveals a kind soul who wants to keep his relationship with his grandfather alive. Alexanders Title, Grandpas Rubiks Cube As the tips for writing essay titles suggest, a good title can take a variety of forms. Alexanders title is certainly not clever or funny or ironic, but it is effective because of its concrete detail. Even at a school that receives 20,000 applications, there wont be a single other application with the title Grandpas Rubiks Cube. The title, like the focus of the essay, is unique to Alexander. Had the title been something more general, it would be less memorable and less successful in capturing the focus of the essay. Titles like A Big Challenge or Determination would be appropriate for this essay, but they could apply to hundreds of different essays and, as a result, fall a bit flat.   The Length The guidelines for the current Common Application state that essays should fall between 250 and 650 words. While there is plenty surrounding the ideal essay length, a compelling 600 word essay can help your application more than a similarly well-written 300 word essay. Colleges that ask for essays have  holistic admissions. In other words, they want to get you as a person, not as a simple empirical matrix of grade and test score data. Youll be able to paint a much more detailed portrait of yourself if you opt for the longer end of the length range. Alexanders essay comes in at 612 words, and the essay isnt wordy, fluffy, or repetitive. A Final Word Alexanders essay doesnt impress us by touting his accomplishments. If anything, it highlights things that he isnt particularly good at doing. This approach carries a little risk, but overall Grandpas Rubiks Cube is a successful essay. It paints a loving portrait of Alexanders grandfather, and it presents Alexander as someone who valued that relationship and wants to honor his grandfathers memory. We see a side of Alexander that we certainly wont see anywhere else in his application. He comes across not just as a student with good writing skills, but someone who is observant, thoughtful, and kind-hearted. Put yourself in the shoes of the admissions staff, and ask yourself an important question: Does the author sound like someone who would contribute to the campus community in a positive way? With this essay, the answer is yes. Alexander seems caring, honest, eager to challenge himself, and willing to fail. These are all characteristics of a good college student and valuable community member. Its also important to note that Alexanders essay is well written. At highly selective schools, glaring writing errors can be disastrous for an applicants chances of being admitted. For help with your own essay, check out these 9 tips for improving your essay style  as well as these 5 tips for a winning essay.   Finally, note that Alexander didnt need to use Common Application essay option #4 for Grandpas Rubiks Cube. The essay could also fit under option #2 on facing a challenge. Is one option better than the other? Probably not—most important is that the essay responds to the prompt, and that the essay is well written. Be sure to look through the tips and strategies for each of the seven essay options to find where your own essay is likely to best fit best, but also keep in mind that the essay itself, not the prompt its responding to, is most important.

A Leadership development Plan Free Sample for Students

Question: Discuss about the leadership theories Style and use the theories to apply on yourself use the Model to Support your Leadership Style. Answer: Introduction The change managementt is one of the most dynamic processes in an organization (Cummings and Worley 2014). In the modern-day world, the organizations are expected to re-direct their business processes, resources and the budget allocations so that they can survive in this competitive world (Langley et al. 2013). There is greater implication of changes in the operations as the modern-day organizations are inclined towards achieving greater operational efficiency (Reason 2016). The process of change management requires extensive leadership abilities to be a successful one. In my earlier organization, I was employed as the Operations Manager of ABC Hospital. My organization relied heavily on the manual process and there was little intervention of the technological advancements. The clinicians and the nurses however used little bit of technology due to their medical nature of work. However, the administration was totally a manual one, which caused severe problems. I was involved in the implementation of IT software known as Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in the organization. The implementation process was initiated during 2014 and it took place in my hospital premises. My role was to supervise the work of the implementing an effective IT infrastructure for my organization, in order to solve the previous issues. The key people involved in the change process were IT specialists, Medical Superintendent, Training Specialist, Nursing Supervisor and the HOD-Operations. Discussion The process of implementing new software in the organization needs extensive capital, labour, raw materials and others. This makes it essential to lead the change management process in the best possible way (Cameron and Green 2015). It is important to deliver required ROI, satisfy the budget allocation and complete the project within the given deadline (Johnston and Marshall 2016). The leader is also supposed to generate the workforce commitment towards the new process and gain their support as well as cooperation. He should be able to tap the potential opportunities which would mean fulfillment of the organizational goals (Kuipers et al. 2014). The leaders should also make sure that the employee resistances are minimized, if it is present. I was involved in computerizing of my hospital and removing the manual records that were used earlier. I was observant of the fact that the manual records used were not up to the mark and it cost the hospital millions of revenues. I performed market data and saw that the other hospitals are actively using the computerized patient records and they can streamline their operations process in a better manner. I consulted the department heads and took their viewpoint while designing the blueprint of the change management process. As opined by Judge and Zapata (2015), the Big Five personality traits, which is a part of the Traits Theory concentrates on the openness to experience and agreeableness. I am open to experience new things and give unusual ideas to help my organization achieve desired goals. When there was loss of revenue due to the manual systems and there was subsequent increase in the patient dissatisfaction rates, then I pondered on how to improve my existing organization cond ition. I became imaginative and independent, which showcased my personal preferences of enhancing the organizational dynamics. I thought of devising a suitable mechanism that would solve the existing operational problems. This made me to devise the new IT software implementation in the hospital. During the implementation of the change process, I showed cooperative as well as compassionate approach towards my fellow colleagues so that the project turns out to be a success. As a leader, I cannot be antagonistic as well as suspicious towards my team members. I trusted my team members and I gave my helpful hand to the team as and when required. I considered that change is inevitable for sustaining in the competitive world. The manual records in the hospital were clumsy, lacked clarity and difficult to retrieve when needed. There was loss of valuable time and this reduced the customer satisfaction rates. According to the Hersey- Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory, there are four distinct attributes of the leaders such as telling, selling, participating and delegating (McCleskey 2014). I engaged in sharing my vision of implementing the EMR system in the hospital to the major stakeholders. I convinced them about the probable benefits of the organization from the new IT system. I said that there would be an increase in the patient satisfaction rates as well as employee improvement rates. This is due to the fact the new IT system would streamline the workflows, which would be beneficial for the employees as well as satisfy the patients. I took the view points of each of my team members and they seemed to be happy with my id ea. I also considered their individual contributions. This made me to delegate tasks as per their expertise and gain support from them. This made me realizes that the change process would help the hospital to meet its long-term vision as well as increase its revenue generation. My goal was to convince my team members about the new idea, gain their approval and bring new software in the organization, which would be beneficial in the day to day operations. I needed to influence maximum number of people in the organization, coordinate with the IT specialists and know the feasibility of such a project. I know that communication is one of the most important aspect of a leader and hence I got a clear idea from the IT team regarding the loopholes as well as advantages of EMR system. I was successful in implementing the change in the organization. I found that some of the most important leadership traits include transparency, confidence, inspiration, integrity, patience an innovation. I found these qualities useful in the process of EMR implementation. I have learned that it is important to enhance the leadership capabilities through practice. I used to have leadership qualities but it improved after I implemented the IT software. Leadership Development Plan It is important to develop an action plan which would help me to imbibe qualities of an effective leader. The two actions are described as below- Set clarity in vision- I have learnt from my past experiences that it is important to determine clear vision while engaging in the leadership process. In the future, if I face the task of managing the change process, I would first write down my detailed vision and the exact things I am trying to achieve. I would then perform a feasibility study to determine if it is actually wise to go with the particular change process. I should also engage in the process of communicating my vision to the major stakeholders. Be role model- I should set an example to my juniors and my team so that they can get motivated. They must admire their leaders and I should take appropriate in every phase of the change management process. I would like to remodel my qualities so that I can present myself well before my team. I should enhance my participation in the change management activity and should made conscious effort to create a positive image of myself in the minds of my colleagues. I would act in a more responsible and people friendly way if I am given to handle a change process. Respect and Why the Marine Corps Has a Rank Structure free essay sample

Respect and why the Marine Corps has a rank structure. There are very few things in the modern military of today or any military that has ever existed before our current military for that matter, that are more important than the rank structure and the the respect that is demanded of you by that rank structure. Those are two very important characteristics of every successful military unit. With added details here and there, in this essay I will mainly be discussing what respect actually is, how being respected is normally earned and in the military how it is demanded of you as a sub-ordinate to any ranks higher than you or in some cases any fellow military personnel who is more senior to you and why. On top of that I will be covering the topic of what a rank structure is, how the United States Marine Corps rank structure operates and more importantly why we as a military whole need it. We will write a custom essay sample on Respect and Why the Marine Corps Has a Rank Structure or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Respect is a word that has a lot of depth to it no matter what way you use it.The word by definition is kinda hard to pin down concretely because it is so subjective and it can be used in many different ways with many different meanings based on the usage. It is a word that everybody wants a piece of no matter how big or small the piece they get is. All definitions aside, the respect that most people want is the respect that is earned by the showing of honorable actions or personality characteristics. Be it dedication and sacrifices for ones job or ones moral and ethical views and principles. These are examples of some traits a person can earn respect from normally.I say â€Å"Normally† because in all facets of life respect is almost always something to be earned and given on a personal level. My personal view is that showing respect is more a statement about us than those to whom we show it. Others may or may not merit our respect, but giving others their dignity protects our integrity and honor. We can set limits, but we do not have to stoop to gross behavior to protect those boundaries. Showing respect to others and allowing them their dignity shows belief in anothers potential and allows healing and growth. We must see that potential. We all need respect, regardless of how immature and gay we behave. We all need others to see our potential and honor it to better encourage us to grow into it. Some respect sound judgement, some strength or power. Some respect altruism, some purposefulness. Parents and teachers may provide initial guidance but what you respect in a person is ultimately your privilege. A Privilege. However skewed my opinion might be the fact is that in most cases respect is earned by the actions towards an individual. All that being said the military works a little different.Respect in the military is demanded of you by your Superior Officers, NCOs and others of same rank that have three months more salt on there collar. This is where not so much the definition but the reason it is given can get shifty. It is when one must absolutely show respect without the normal necessity of actually respecting that person specifically. You are respecting the title held by a male or female that is above you, normally by a pay grade or 4 and in the Commissioned Officers case, on a whole different level than you are as an enlisted man.Not to say that one cannot find an Commissioned Officer or Non Commissioned Officer that actually deserves it for his or her character traits. Because I haven’t met too many Non Commissioned or Commissioned officers that don’t deserve respect for all reasons. Most of the time good leaders are placed in leadership positions. It does happen. Maybe they were crap leaders in the beginning and the weight of the title changed them. Who knows. But in my short boot career as a marine I have found that it is very rare that a person who has actual leadership quality’s gets put in the leadership positions on the underside of the NCO spectrum.More often than not it is the loudest guy who can bench-press the world while still maintaining the stance of the biggest prick in existence that gets placed in those positions. That is my experience at least with E-3 and below in mind. All told, in the military respect fits nut-to-butt with the rank structure that is currently in place. Rank structure is something that has been around pretty much forever. At least as far back to the beginning of pack animals with their alphas and pretty much ever since our slightly less human counter parts be it early man or monkeys began fighting for power over the same stuff we fight over now.Chicks, land, resources and religion. It is the structure that dictates whom is the leader and who is the subordinate. This applies to the military directly, with our own specific rank structure drawn out and stitched on. Its pretty simple. We have the Commissioned Officers at the top of the proverbial pyramid with the warrant Officers in the middle and finally the Non Commissioned Officers which are Enlisted men or women on the bottom. Then placed neatly on the bottom of the crapper underneath all other ranks there are the E-3s and below. Within each limb of rank there are sub ranks with a high and low rank.It all pretty simple. All of this is in place because there has to be a hierarchy of â€Å"leadership† that is strictly followed so that the current mission involved by whomever is completed as quickly and smoothly as possible. Missions can be big or small. It could be making sure bad guys don’t steal nukes or making sure the food doesn’t taste nuked. Regardless, mission success is tantamount and without a system set in place saying who answers to who, it would all likely end in mission failure and Canada pwning us. We cant have that. Because Canada sucks.

Free Essays on Ancient Egypt Free Essays on Ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptian Agriculture There are many valid points to be made in Ancient Egyptian agriculture. Irrigation, ploughing and planting, harvesting, and of course, crops. These will be some of the subtopics I will be touching upon in this essay of ancient Egyptian agriculture. Irrigation When the Nile is overflowing, it floods the Delta and the lands called Libyan and Arabian, for a distance of a journey of two days from both banks in places, and sometimes, sometimes less. I could not learn anything about its nature, neither from the priests nor from anyone else. I was curious to learn why the Nile is flooding for a hundred days from the summer solstice; and when this time is passed, sinks again, and the river is low during the whole winter until the summer solstice again. -Herodotus, Histories 2,19 Above, is a quote from a man recovered from an article of writing back in the ancient Egyptian times. Irrigation is a form of re, there are two crops, one crop is getting all the water, and it’s flooding. With irrigation, the farmer will re-route the water towards the other crop, as well as sharing the water with the crop that was being flooded. So now, both crops are getting enough water and they are not flooding nor suffering from drought. Natural river irrigation shaped the early landscape of ancient Egypt. Drainage was not required for the Valley to become liveable. With the natural flooding and draining of the floodplain, the annual flood allowed a single crop-season over two-thirds of the alluvial ground. Once the main canals, many of them natural, were in place, they just had to be scoured yearly to prevent their clogging up. The levees had to be raised, and smaller ditches had to be re-excavated. Organized by the regional authorities, every Egyptian had to move about thirty cubic metres of soil in about ten days every ... Free Essays on Ancient Egypt A. Free Essays on Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt Between 3100 and 332 B.C was the rise and climax of one of the richest and oldest ancient civilizations. It’s lifeline was the Nile river in the Nile valley. Here, Egyptian dynasties ruled from the first cataract of the Nile to the Mediterranean Sea. At the it’s height it ruled an empire that reached from Syria in the east to Nubia in the south. In this report I will be covering the Archaic Period, the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom the New Kingdom and The Late Period or 3100-332 B.C. Archaic Period: 3100 B.C to 2750 B.C There long history began with there first King who began the first Egyptian dynasty. In 3100 B.C Pharaoh Menes united upper and lower Egypt. Making Egypt’s first empire. In doing so, he made the Egyptian double crown. It was made by putting the red crown of Lower Egypt on top of the white crown of upper Egypt. Menes ruled from the ancient city of Thinis near Abydos. Under his reign the first hieroglyphic writing was made. He is also credited with making his empire interdependent. Old Kingdom: 2750 B.C to 2181 B.C / First Intermediate Period: 2182-2260 Little is known about Menes successors until the reign of Zoser at the end of the 3rd dynasty. His capital was located at Memphis on the Nile’s west bank. He built the world’s first pyramid and the first building of that size to be entirely made of stone. Even though it was a pyramid it wasn’t a true pyramid, but a step pyramid. After the reign of the last king of the Sixth dynasty (the last dynasty in the old kingdom.) Pepi II in 2181 B.C, there was a period of crisis and social upheaval known as the First Intermediate Period. The reasons leading up to this dark time, was a series of low floods and the result was famine during the Sixth dynasty. This undermined the stability of Egypt and provoked rebellion. Criminology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Criminology - Essay Example The critical criminologists believe that the marginalization and criminalization are highly integrated with each other. This may affect the mental state of the individuals under marginalization and some of them may indulge in any criminal activities. The marginalization may occur at individual level or at group or community level. The people with physical or mental disabilities are subjected to marginalization at individual level. This is against the basic principles of human rights and several nations have made their legislature to reduce or avoid this practice. The employers or organizations may consider the inclusion of disabled people as a stumbling block to the productivity. In this process, they indulge in marginalization which is unfair. Moreover, the companies must work with principle of equality and corporate social responsibility. Therefore, marginalization must be eradicated by the employers. The marginalization may also be found in community or group level in the form of women and aboriginal groups. When the people are subjected to colonialism, they will have to leave their place of residence and will be settling in new areas and during this process, they are marginalized to participate in any social functioning. Similarly, the women are subjected to marginalization as far as the employment in some organizations is concerned. Criminalization means a process of imposing a criminal penalty for the illegal act committed by any person. According to critical criminologists, it is a social process in which individual may undergo a transformation of their behavior to crime or violent act (Mc Laughlin et al., 2002). The origin of criminal behavior may be in the form of discrimination or victimization (Walklate, 1989). Criminalization may disrupt the social order, and hence the society requires legal order that controls the crime rate. Some times, the criminalization may be originated from lack of health safety measures due to which other persons in the soci ety get potential harm. For example, the defendant was sentenced to two year imprisonment under criminal law for being responsible for the transmission of Hepatitis B in UK (Mohanty, 2009). As mentioned earlier, critical criminologists argue that the criminalization may be originated due to distorted mental behavior when a person is subjected to marginalization in the society and having historical link with criminalization may be considered as a cause for marginalization (Walklate, 2003). Hence the criminalization and marginalization are correlated with each other. For example, the criminal history of the Black youth, the black cultural spaces were excluded from new playgrounds of the night time economy in UK (Talbot and Bose, 2007). Hence, in the control of crime rate in the society, the steps for reducing the marginalization would be of immense help. The thorough analysis of causes or factors of victimology would certainly help in reducing the menace of criminalization in the soci ety (Fattah, 1992). Restaurant Review Essay Example for Free

Restaurant Review Essay Toronto, with a population of 5.5 million people, is the largest, modern and culturally diverse city in Canada. As it is one of the most multicultural cities on earth, no other city has this unique international atmosphere than the Greater Toronto Area. There are presently over 140 languages and dialects spoken in Toronto and because of these reasons, many immigrants choose to live in this beautiful city. It is certain that the increase in immigrants will definitely bring a positive impact to the local food industry. There are many different kinds of restaurants that are located in the city of Toronto; such as family style, country style, Western, Chinese, Korean, and etc. One of the most astonishing restaurants I have visited is called Kinton Ramen. Kinton Ramen is located in the city of Toronto, at 51 Baldwin Street. Kinton Ramen is an authentic Japanese noodle bar restaurant that specializes in traditional Japanese alcoholic drinks and Ramen. The traditional flavour of the restaurant can be seen beyond the vast array of menu items into its atmosphere and decors. This 46 seats restaurant was opened in May 2012 and has become a landmark on Baldwin Street for those customers who are looking for traditional Japanese Ramen. Kinton Ramen was established by the owners of the â€Å"Guu† Japanese bar restaurant chain and is being operated independently by the Kinton Ramen group. Read more: Restaurant Review Essay Kinton Ramen utilizes online mediums and word of mouth as their marketing strategies. Through using online mediums such as online blog and Facebook, it has enabled the restaurant to connect and interact with new customers from the internet, and has also allowed the restaurant to build relationships with existing customers. For example: After you have finished a bowl of Ramen, the sever may invite you to take a photo that would be posted on Facebook; in which you would be identified as a Kinton Bowler (optional). Additional reasons that contribute to Kinton Ramen’s success would be word of mouth from customers. I came to know about this unique Japanese noodle bar located on Baldwin Street from my friends. After visiting to Kinton Ramen, I found there are three elements that lead Kinton Ramen’s success are consistency, efficiency, and excellent customer service. I have visited the restaurant for more than five times, and the food items have been consistent and delicious. As mentioned before, Kinton Ramen is a 46 seats restaurant, consequently seats are very limited. Hence, the Kinton Ramen group takes the time control very seriously. Orders are usually prepared within 5 to 10 minutes after being placed by customer. In addition to the restaurant’s efficient service, Kinton Ramen offers excellent hospitality services. Kinton Ramen staff members will enthusiastically greet all customers and because of their team spirit and all warm-hearted service attitudes, they have created an enjoyable surrounding for their customers. As a final point, Kinton Ramen is an excellent Japanese noodle bar restaurant. They are not only selling delicious food and beverage items, but also offer enthusiastic customer service. These reasons undeniably are making me to go their restaurant more often.

Compare and Contrast A Description of New England and A Model of Christ

Compare and Contrast A Description of New England and A Model of Christian Charity Mankind can be conceived in interesting ways by analyzing the writings of John Smith and John Winthrop.   As I read through John Smith‘s â€Å"A Description of New England† and John Winthrop’s â€Å"A Model of Christian Charity,† it became evident to me that the two readings had similar and different viewpoints of the essential nature of man.   Throughout my paper, I will compare their similar beliefs of community and diversity of people and completely contrast their ideas of emphasis on religion and relationships with enemies.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Both authors stress a sense of community and diversity in order to survive in America.   Smith could not think of anything to â€Å"be more pleasant, than planting and building a foundation for his posterity, got from the rude earth, by God’s blessing and his own industry, without prejudice to any† (Smith 114).   This proves Smith believes everyone in the community should join together without showing any type of discrimination.   Likewise, Winthrop declares we must have â€Å"before our eyes commission and community in the work, our community as members of the same body† (Winthrop 225).   He basically wants the settlers to live and share their wealth as one joined community.   Smith and Winthrop also agree that diversity needs to exist in each community.   â€Å"Carpenters, masons, fishers, fowlers, gardeners, husbandmen, sawyers, smiths, spinsters, tailors, weavers, and such like† are the variety of men Smith f ound in America (Smith 117).   All of these types of men contribute a part of their lives to their community.   In the same way, Winthrop assumes God ordered â€Å"all these differences for the preservation and good of the whole† (Winthrop 21... ...ospel.   Both authors have totally opposing opinions on how an enemy should be treated in America.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ideas of community and diversity of people are similar for Smith and Winthrop, but their emphasis on religion and relationships with enemies greatly differ.   In other words, both authors feel a need for togetherness among various groups of people in order to start a successful life in America.   But while Winthrop places more emphasis on God, Smith places more emphasis on having power over the enemy.   This makes their views of man completely different when it comes to how religion has affected our lives and how we act toward one another.   Like Winthrop, I believe that God is the basis of our life, and He has shown us the way to lead a productive life by loving our enemies.   Without religion, America would not have become the civilized country that it is today. Era of Good Feelings Dbq

During the Era of Good Feelings, Nationalism and Sectionalism were both evident. However, sectionalism was the most important cause of disagreement within the country with the controversy over Missouri’s admission as a slave state, and the different views toward states’ rights throughout various sections of the country. When Missouri applied to become part of the union, they insisted on being a slave state. This upset the north due to their interest in a balance of power. The Missouri Compromise was enacted with the help of Henry Clay in order to come to a conclusion to the political arguments between the North and South. It stated that in order for Missouri to be accepted as a slave state, Maine would come into the union as a free state. Also, slavery wasn’t to be permitted north of latitude 36? 30’. The long retired Thomas Jefferson expressed his alarm to the happenings in American government by comparing the sectional disunity to a â€Å"fire bell in th e night [that] awaked and filled me with terror. (Document G) John Quincy Adams also stated that â€Å"If the union must be dissolved, slavery is precisely the question upon which it ought to break. † (Document F) By simply drawing a line to determine boundaries of slavery, it was inevitable that neither side would be completely satisfied in the long run. Sectionalism was also evident through economical differences between the North and South. The South’s growing agricultural society relied heavily on slavery.Inventions such as Eli Whitney’s cotton gin increased production of cotton vastly, and in return brought more slaves. In the North however, industry was the main priority. Many goods were manufactured in the North and transferred to the South for use in fields. When the Tariff of 1816 which taxed goods manufactured in the North was passed, nearly all southerners voted against it (Document H}. As disagreements arose, the idea of sectionalism continued to exp and. The so called â€Å"Era of Good Feelings† faced problems of factional disagreements.Sectional divisions were merely covered up by the unity of political parties during Monroe’s presidency. Although the parties seemed united, Eastern Republicans disagreed with the idea of internal improvements, which was a big part of Henry Clay’s â€Å"American System. † On the other hand, John C. Calhoun supported the idea of internal improvements (Document D), but later became a leading advocate for state’s rights. Also, the Election of 1824 caused the Democratic Republican Party to splinter.John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were both members f the same party, but ran against each other due to disagreements based on their different sectional interests such as their view on protective tariffs. This destroyed the sense of national unity amongst the government, thus further establishing sectionalism. In closing, although the Era of Good Feelings seemed to be as era of national unity, the opposite was proven true. Examples such as the Missouri disagreements and the separation of the Democratic Republican party prove that sectionalism was evident. The difference of economic beliefs of the North and South ensured further conflict in the future.

Essay Mahayana Buddhism - 1396 Words

History proves that as Buddhism spread throughout the Asian world in the early 1st century, it was occasionally altered to fit the specific needs and beliefs of people it touched. Mahayana Buddhism is one such example of this gradual evolution. It was primarily a movement started and kept alive by monks that slowly gained popularity amongst lay people but was in no way a unified movement. Mahayana Buddhism still adheres to the basic fundamental beliefs presented in the Pali Canons, however, it Sutras often expand upon these basic ideas and traditions in order to answer the questions of a later generation. The truth is within reach for all, they just have to look within themselves to find and accept it. The sutras also make clear the idea of the Bodhisattva, those who have reached awakening and refrain from entering Nirvana in order to help others along the path. For example, the TathÄ gata is described as a person with â€Å"penetrating wisdom, and was endowed with a perfectly pure divine eye† (World Universe as a Sutra, 109). The TathÄ gata has already found the knowledge and truth within himself and is therefore able to see that the same wisdom is present within every being. He finds it strange that every being cannot see the truth within, and therefore, takes it upon himself to â€Å"teach these beings so that they may fully awaken within the Noble path.† This is known as the â€Å"tenth intuition of Bodhisattvas†, where the Bodhisattvas â€Å"practice, know and per ceive†, the minds of the awakened inShow MoreRelatedTheravada And Mahayana Buddhism And Buddhism1433 Words   |  6 Pagesschisms of Buddhism due to different outlooks on the fundamental teachings and ideas of Buddhism. Winners Never Cheat - 1792 Words

Winners never cheat and cheaters never win Winners never cheat and cheaters never win. Americans have grown up with this statement. It is as American as baseball or apple pie. It appears that over the years, winning has become everything and athletes will do whatever it takes to win. In order to achieve this goal, more and more professional athletes are turning to the use of performance enhancing drugs. A performance enhancing drug is any substance that is taken for the sole purpose of enhancing athletic performance (Saltzman, 2006 p. 16). Professional athletes who take performance enhancing drugs create false expectations for the children and teenagers who look up to them. Athletes are role models, whether they like it or not.†¦show more content†¦Athletes accepted the charges in 120 cases, but in the remaining 29 instances they challenged the agency, which put the cases into arbitration. (Nawrocki, 2006, p.24) In an interview with the Travel Tygart, the general counsel for the United States Anti-Doping Agency, Nawrocki (2006, p.24) quotes him as saying that his job is less about catching the bad athletes and more about protecting the clean ones. According to Nawrocki, (2006, p.24) the consequences for Floyd Landis, if found guilty, would not only lose the title and prize money, but would also be barred from all professional competition for two years. There would be no jail time, no fines paid, and no probation. To a youth, the consequence hardly seems tangible; there is no real cause and effect. A two year suspension is not going to sway a youth from trying to emulate his or her idol. Coincidentally, more and more teenagers are also turning to illegal drugs to boost their athletic abilities. Saltzman (2006, p. 16) stated that In January 2006, Bulgarian teenager Sesil Karantantcheva became the second woman tennis player to receive a ban as a result of a drug offense. This only begins t o illustrate the problem with the youth who look up to professional athletes. The Disadvantages of Smoking free essay sample

The disadvantages of smoking Smoking is one of the worst things kids and adults can do to their bodies. But it is widespread in China, even some of the high school students are smoking now. I think we should tell more people about the effects of smoking. Here are some disadvantages which I have seen, read, or heard about smoking before. Smoking affects your own bodies’ health. In my family, my dad and most of my uncles smoke. It has been almost 20 years since they have started smoking. This long a time smoking made them have yellow teeth, smelly clothes, and yellow fingers. Smoking also made them easy to get a cough. There are also a couple of my female friends that smoke now. Most of them are easy to get tired and angry. So they sometimes may have fight with other students. Also, they pay fewer attention to the classes at school. We will write a custom essay sample on The Disadvantages of Smoking or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Except those things above, smoking also causes cancer. Actually, smoking is the number one cause of deaths due to lung cancer, and other serious diseases. For girls, smoking can make you have a bad skin and performance. Smoking also affects the people around you when you smoke. Have you ever heard about second hand smoke? This is actually the name of it. In most ways, second hand smoke comes from the end of a lighted cigarette or exhales by a smoker. Second hand smoke causes cancer and other kinds of diseases and deaths to non-smoking people. I think it is unfair to a non-smoking person, because of you; they may have the same or worse health problems than you do. If a pregnant woman is exposed to second hand smoke, there will be a risk of having low birth-weight babies. Smoking is a big cost of your ordinary lives, too. Cigarettes are expensive. A pack of cigarettes costs $4. 0 in the United States, on average. According to this, we know even if you buy just one pack one week, you will spend $234 per year. But if you smoke a pack per day, that would be $1624 per year. For this money, you can buy many clothes, shoes, CDs, and computer games instead. My dad counted the money my whole family spent on cigarettes last year. The number of the money we spent is $15,000. My dad and uncles needed two or three packs per day; they also smoke good cigarettes, so the price of cigarettes would be more expensive than the average price in America. They like to send their friends or other family members cigarettes as gifts, too. That will be another reason for them to spend such a big number of money on smoking. Smoking is easy to start but hard to stop. This is because cigarettes have tobacco inside. Tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Just like drugs, your body will quickly become so used to the nicotine, so that it would request you to smoke every day to make yourself feel normal. I remember my dad tried to give up smoking many times, but he failed in every time of trying. He told me that it was hard for him to give up smoking for a long time. If he didn’t smoke for one day, he would feel so uncomfortable, and then he would smoke more times than before! Due to all the things above, we know how important it is for a person to stay away from smoking. If you never smoke, the bad effects of those above will never get to you. But for a smoking person, I suggest you to try your best to give up smoking. As you stop smoking, you will have better performance and looks, more money and energy, and also more life to live!

Raising Children Essay Example

Raising Children Essay OPINION Raising Successful Children Lizzy Stewart By MADELINE LEVINE * PHRASES like â€Å"tiger mom† and â€Å"helicopter parent† have made their way into everyday language. But does overparenting hurt, or help? Related * Sunday Book Review: ‘Teach Your Children Well’ by Madeline Levine (July 29, 2012) Related in Opinion * Room for Debate: Are Olympic Parents Supportive or Overbearing? (August 2, 2012) While parents who are clearly and embarrassingly inappropriate come in for ridicule, many of us find ourselves drawn to the idea that with just a bit more parental elbow grease, we might turn out children with great talents and assured futures. Is there really anything wrong with a kind of â€Å"overparenting lite†? Parental involvement has a long and rich history of being studied. Decades of studies, many of them by Diana Baumrind, a clinical and developmental psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that the optimal parent is one who is involved and responsive, who sets high expectations but respects her child’s autonomy. These â€Å"authoritative parents† appear to hit the sweet spot of parental involvement and generally raise children who do better academically, psychologically and socially than children whose parents are either permissive and less involved, or controlling and more involved. Why is this particular parenting style so successful, and what does it tell us about overparenting? For one thing, authoritative parents actually help cultivate motivation in their children. Carol Dweck, a social and developmental psychologist at Stanford University, has done research that indicates why authoritative parents raise more motivated, and thus more successful, children. In a typical experiment, Dr. Dweck takes young children into a room and asks them to solve a simple puzzle. Most do so with little difficulty. But then Dr. Dweck tells some, but not all, of the kids how very bright and capable they are. As it turns out, the children who are not told they’re smart are more motivated to tackle increasingly difficult puzzles. This may seem counterintuitive, but praising children’s talents and abilities seems to rattle their confidence. Tackling more difficult puzzles carries the risk of losing one’s status as â€Å"smart† and deprives kids of the thrill of choosing to work simply for its own sake, regardless of outcomes. Dr. Dweck’s work aligns nicely with that of Dr. Baumrind, who also found that reasonably supporting a child’s autonomy and limiting interference results in better academic and emotional outcomes. Their research confirms what I’ve seen in more than 25 years of clinical work, treating children in Marin County, an affluent suburb of San Francisco. The happiest, most successful children have parents who do not do for them what they are capable of doing, or almost capable of doing; and their parents do not do things for them that satisfy their own needs rather than the needs of the child. The central task of growing up is to develop a sense of self that is autonomous, confident and generally in accord with reality. If you treat your walking toddler as if she can’t walk, you diminish her confidence and distort reality. Ditto nightly â€Å"reviews† of homework, repetitive phone calls to â€Å"just check if you’re O. K. † and â€Å"editing† (read: writing) your child’s college application essay. Once your child is capable of doing something, congratulate yourself on a job well done and move on. Continued, unnecessary intervention makes your child feel bad about himself (if he’s young) or angry at you (if he’s a teenager). But isn’t it a parent’s job to help with those things that are just beyond your child’s reach? Why is it overparenting to do for your child what he or she is almost capable of? Think back to when your toddler learned to walk. She would take a weaving step or two, collapse and immediately look to you for your reaction. You were in thrall to those early attempts and would do everything possible to encourage her to get up again. You certainly didn’t chastise her for failing or utter dire predictions about flipping burgers for the rest of her life if she fell again. You were present, alert and available to guide if necessary. But you didn’t pick her up every time. You knew she had to get it wrong many times before she could get it right. HANGING back and allowing children to make mistakes is one of the greatest challenges of parenting. It’s easier when they’re young — tolerating a stumbling toddler is far different from allowing a preteenager to meet her friends at the mall. The potential mistakes carry greater risks, and part of being a parent is minimizing risk for our children. What kinds of risks should we tolerate? If there’s a predator loose in the neighborhood, your daughter doesn’t get to go to the mall. But under normal circumstances an 11-year-old girl is quite capable of taking care of herself for a few hours in the company of her friends. She may forget a package, overpay for an item or forget that she was supposed to call home at noon. Mastery of the world is an expanding geography for our kids, for toddlers, it’s the backyard; for preteens, the neighborhood, for teens the wider world. But it is in the small daily risks — the taller slide, the bike ride around the block, the invitation extended to a new classmate — that growth takes place. In this gray area of just beyond the comfortable is where resilience is born. So if children are able to live with mistakes and even failing, why does it drive us crazy? So many parents have said to me, â€Å"I can’t stand to see my child unhappy. † If you can’t stand to see your child unhappy, you are in the wrong business. The small challenges that start in infancy (the first whimper that doesn’t bring you running) present the opportunity for â€Å"successful failures,† that is, failures your child can live with and grow from. To rush in too quickly, to shield them, to deprive them of those challenges is to deprive them of the tools they will need to handle the inevitable, difficult, challenging and sometimes devastating demands of life. While doing things for your child unnecessarily or prematurely can reduce motivation and increase dependency, it is the inability to maintain parental boundaries that most damages child development. When we do things for our children out of our own needs rather than theirs, it forces them to circumvent the most critical task of childhood: to develop a robust sense of self. There is an important distinction between good and bad parental involvement. For example, a young child doesn’t want to sit and do his math homework. Good parents insist on compliance, not because they need their child to be a perfect student but because the child needs to learn the fundamentals of math and develop a good work ethic. Compare this with the parent who spends weeks â€Å"helping† his or her child fill out college applications with the clear expectation that if they both work hard enough, a â€Å"gotta get into† school is a certainty. (While most of my parent patients have graduated from college, it is always a telltale sign of overparenting when they talk about how â€Å"we’re applying to Columbia. †) In both situations parents are using control, in the first case behavioral (sit down, do your math) and in the second psychological (â€Å"we’re applying. †) It is psychological control that carries with it a textbook’s worth of damage to a child’s developing identity. If pushing, direction, motivation and reward always come from the outside, the child never has the opportunity to craft an inside. Having tutors prep your anxious 3-year-old for a preschool interview because all your friends’ children are going to this particular school or pushing your exhausted child to take one more advanced-placement course because it will ensure her spot as class valedictorian is not involved parenting but toxic overparenting aimed at meeting the parents’ need for status or affirmation and not the child’s needs. So how do parents find the courage to discard the malpractice of overparenting? It’s hard to swim upstream, to resist peer pressure. But we must remember that children thrive best in an environment that is reliable, available, consistent and noninterfering. A loving parent is warm, willing to set limits and unwilling to breach a child’s psychological boundaries by invoking shame or guilt. Parents must acknowledge their own anxiety. Your job is to know your child well enough to make a good call about whether he can manage a particular situation. Will you stay up worrying? Probably, but the child’s job is to grow, yours is to control your anxiety so it doesn’t get in the way of his reasonable moves toward autonomy. Parents also have to be clear about their own values. Children watch us closely. If you want your children to be able to stand up for their values, you have to do the same. If you believe that a summer spent reading, taking creek walks and playing is better than a specialized camp, then stick to your guns. Parents also have to make sure their own lives are fulfilling. There is no parent more vulnerable to the excesses of overparenting than an unhappy parent. One of the most important things we do for our children is to present them with a version of adult life that is appealing and worth striving for. Madeline Levine is a clinician, consultant and the author, most recently, of â€Å"Teach Your Children Well: Parenting for Authentic Success. †
